Cluster of Excellence BlueMat: Water-Driven Materials
06 August, 2025
BlueMat funded as a cluster of excellence – A major milestone for CMWS
We are happy to share that BlueMat: Water-Driven Materials has been awarded funding as part of Germany’s Clusters of Excellence program. With this success, the partner institutions will receive up to €70 million in research funding, securing support until 2033.
BlueMat, based at Hamburg University of Technology (TU Hamburg), follows a globally unique and pioneering approach: the development of a new class of sustainable materials that change their properties through interaction with water, inspired by natural systems. These innovations have the potential to revolutionize applications such as smart windows, thermal insulation for energy-efficient buildings, and the harvesting and storage of environmental energy.
In partnership with the CMWS, BlueMat represents a strategic expansion of the scientific landscape in Hamburg and will play a major role in advancing research at the interface of fundamental science and applied materials innovation through interdisciplinary collaboration.
